ITU celebrates its 150th Anniversary
January 28, 2015

This year, 2015, marks the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union.
Established in 1865, ITU has reaffirmed its reputation worldwide as one of the most resilient and relevant organizations and continues its work as the specialized agency of the United Nations, and its oldest member, dealing with state-of-the-art telecommunications and information and communication technologies from telegraphy to the modern world of satellites, mobile phones and internet.

ITU allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develops the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect and strives to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities worldwide. ITU is committed to connecting all the world's people – wherever they live and whatever their means. Through their work, they protect and support everyone's fundamental right to communicate.

In October 2007, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority(TRA) became Lebanon's official representative as a Sector Member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The TRA takes its place among 193 member states as well as more than 700 sector members and associates, all responsible for playing a role in the development of the global ICT industry.

Throughout 2015, ITU will organize several events highlighting ICTs as the drivers of innovation at ITU and around the world to mark this landmark 150th anniversary. ITU will focus each month on a different ICT-related theme with activities including a mix of personal testimonies, blogs, press releases, infographics, webinars, podcasts, videos etc… For more info about the themes, kindly click here

Being a sector member of the ITU, the TRA of Lebanon will be participating in the events and providing its support by creating awareness around ITU and its work through its website and social media channels.
