In light of the statement published in the press on March 24, 2010 by His Excellency the Minister of Telecommunications Dr. Charbel Nahass, the TRA published today a press release where it thanked the Council of Ministers for having approved the amended decree of the Authority’s advance on payment, and expressed recognition to the Minister of telecom for his understanding, collaboration and support.

The TRA also emphasized on the necessity of applying the Telecommunications Law 431/2002 in regard of its prerogatives and relation with the Ministry, and stressed on the importance of the cooperation between the two institutions for the public interest.

On the other hand, the press release stated that the Telecommunications Law 431 does not entitle the TRA to sign any contract with another party since the Authority’s financing relies only on the draft budget, to be approved by concerned authorities as per applicable legal procedure.

The Authority stressed on the need to empower this first Lebanese regulatory institution, while assuring the independence of its administrative and financial decision making process, as a necessary step to guarantee public interest and the rights of all involved parties as well as the development of the telecommunications sector.
