The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations General Assembly have declared May 17th to be the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, and have thus adopted for the year of 2008, the theme of: “Connecting Persons with Disabilities: ICT Opportunities for All” to address the special requirements of persons with disabilities.

As a member of the ITU, the TRA has supported this initiative by inviting Lebanese ICT organizations and Service Providers to make a difference and adopt positive measures in the services they render to the disabled by:

1.promoting access for persons with disabilities to new ICT, including the Internet
2.providing information in accessible formats and technologies appropriate to different kinds of disabilities in a timely manner and without additional cost
3.urging private entities that render services to the public to provide information and services in accessible and usable formats for persons with disabilities
4.encouraging all ICT and SP’s to agree on a charter for the right of disabled persons to telecommunications
