Telecoms World Middle East provides a comprehensive review of the region’s telecommunications industry, and lays out a strategic roadmap for the sector's future development.

The workshop, held in Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai, UAE, examined key subjects which enable the development of the telecom sector, mainly ranging from the financial, legal and regulatory challenges inherent in international expansion to the potential revenues provided by emerging technologies and the development of infrastructure. The rollout of WiMAX services and the drive to improve the region’s connectivity and bandwidth were also examined in detail courtesy of the WiMAX Summit MENA and Submarine Networks Middle East briefing days.

Dr. Kamal Shehadi, Chairman and CEO of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, participated in a Panel Discussion titled “Striking the balance: Determining the pace and focus of liberalization to ensure healthy competition and steady growth” with the Director General of the TRA (Bahrain), Mr. Alan Horne, and the Director General of the TRA (UAE), Mr Mohamad al Ghanim.
 
The panel tackled the following topics:

  • Overview of recent developments in telecommunications competition and pricing regulation
  • Gauging the impact on operator growth 
  • Reviewing the next phase of regulation in the wake of increased convergence
  • Facilitating fair competition between new entrants and established incumbents
  • Regulatory frameworks required to promote sustainable growth
