As part of its agreement with Symantec and with a view to facilitate sharing of relevant cybersecurity material, ITU presents the 2014 edition of Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report. This report provides a compilation and analysis of the profile, evolution and impacts of threats in the past year. The executive summary of the report mentions that : “…In 2013 much attention was focused on cyber-espionage, threats to privacy and the acts of malicious insiders. However the end of 2013 provided a painful reminder that cybercrime remains prevalent and that damaging threats from cybercriminals continue to loom over businesses and consumers. Eight breaches in 2013 each exposed greater than 10 million identities, targeted attacks increased and end-user attitudes towards social media and mobile devices resulted in wild scams and laid a foundation for major problems for end users and businesses as these devices come to dominate our lives.
This year’s ISTR once again covers the wide-ranging threat landscape, with data collected and analyzed by Symantec’s security experts. In this summary, we call out seven areas that deserve special attention…”
