Dr. Imad Hoballah, TRA acting Chairman and CEO, gave a speech titled “Cybersecurity in Lebanon…Reality and expectations” at the opening ceremony of the IEEE-LCW’10 workshop that took place on December 18, 2010, at the Faculty of Engineering of the Lebanese University. This workshop was marked by the presence and participation of Dr. Zaher Dawi, chairman of the IEEE ComSoc Lebanon chapter at the American University of Beirut, Dr. Elias Nassar, Chairman of the IEEE Lebanon section at the Notre Dame University, Dr. Mohamed Zoater, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Lebanese University, Mr. Raoul Chiesa, Senior Adviser, Strategic Alliances and Cybercrime issues at the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Institute, Mr. Mohamed Ayoub, Senior Spectrum Management Expert at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the vice-chairman of the IEEE ComSoc Lebanon chapter, in addition to a number of engineers, telecom experts and engineering students at the Lebanese University.
Dr. Hoballah exposed in his speech the growing misuse of electronic networks that adversely affect the integrity of national critical information infrastructures as well as private personal information and children safety. He also discussed the various ways to build an efficient national Cybersecurity strategy.
On the other hand, he stressed on the fact that Cybersecurity should be every citizen’s responsibility where everyone should contribute, each one at his level, to secure a successful strategy. He concluded his speech by exposing the Lebanese challenges and the possible means to overcome them.
Mr. Mohamad Ayoub, Senior Spectrum Management Expert at the TRA, chaired the second technical session of the workshop that addressed topics related to enhancing online security through open trust frameworks, ensuring cyber security at the national, institutional and individuals levels as well as the GSM security.
